It is highly possible that, in the eyes of the established church, John was an illegitimate child of John and Mary Hirst. But until 1837 only Church of England marriages were recognized as valid in England, and both John and Mary were baptized in non-conformist chapels as were all of their children. John was one of three sons named in his father's will.
