Both dates for the marriage infer that Lydia, John jr and Sarah were illegitimate. It should be noted that both John and Mary were not baptized in the Church of England, nor were any of their children. Until 1837 in England only marriages performed in the Church of England (the "established church") were recognised by the state. Both marriages could have been performed by a local vicar who decided that something was amiss in this family.

[9 Nov 2024] Some of the children currently in the list of 17 have been discovered not to be those of John and Mary and will eventualy be deleted. However, this research is still ongoing. There were a number of Hirst families in the parish of Almondbury at the beginning of the 19th century.
