Facts and Events
Mary Sonnedecker and George Gerstenschlager were divorced about 1925. ARTICLE: Wooster (Ohio) Daily Record, Friday, January 18, 1929, page 1. Woman Killed on Crossing at Creston: Mrs. Gerstenschlager Dies Instantly When Hit by Train on the B. & O. Mrs. Mayme Gerstenschlager, 55, who was killed by a Baltimore & Ohio train at Creston last evening, met her death because of "inadequate protection" at the main street crossing, according to County Coroner Dr. J. B. Patterson, who held an inquest after the tragedy. The coroner's inquiry into the accident showed that Mrs. Gerstenschlager was walking north on the east side of the street and stopped at the crossing while the west-bound freight train whizzed by. Then she started across the tracks, being unaware of the approach of the east-bound train, which struck her, carrying her body sixty feet down the track, and tossed it aside. Her skull was fractured, both legs broken, and other injuries sustained, so that death was intantaneous. Second Night on Job Cliff Kaser, the watchman was a new man. last night being his second time on duty. The watchman, however, was not at fault, the coroner decided, because he was in position out in the middle of the street, and called as loudly as he could when he saw the woman attempting to cross the track. His call, however, was drowned out by the noise of the train. "I am firmly convinced that the crossing is not adequately protected," Dr. Patterson said today. "My finding will be that effect and will assign the woman's death to that cause." The crossing has been the scene of numerous fatal accidents during recent years. Mrs. Gerstenschlager was the divorced wife of George Gerstenschlager. She was the mother of Frank, Stanley, Harry and Robert Gerstenschlager, all of Creston. The body was taken to the Murray undertaking parlor in Creston and prepared for burial. It will remain there until late Saturday, when it will be taken to the Gerstenschlager home on Stebbins street, from where funeral services will be held at 12 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Stout. References
