Biography of Mary Alice Cowan Richey

Mary was born 26 Jan 1812 in South Carolina[7]. She married Elias Bishop in Jefferson County, Alabama on 4 Feb 1828. He was a neighbor and a family Bible record says he was born 22 Jan 1809 in South Carolina[7], to John and Elizabeth Bishop. They lived for about ten years in Jefferson County, Alabama before they moved with the family group to Texas. They sold their Jefferson County land on 16 Sep 1839[4]. She and Elias applied for a land grant in Texas on 7 November 1839 in Red River, Republic of Texas, receiving 640 acres indexed as certificate number 92, 3nd class in 1840 Citizens of Texas by Gifford White, p. 21[2]. It is noteworthy that this is the same date of John Richey's patent for his 640 acres, and the number right before his. They moved to Upshur County, Texas a few years after their arrival in Texas. The Bishop headright was cut by the main road from Jefferson, Texas to Greenville, Texas.

Bishop was a surveyor, cabinet maker, and farmer. He also operated an inn for travelers and sold his cabinet work to settlers and travelers going west. Mary Alise was a hard working wife and mother. Their home site was laid off in a square, one acre in size. All his buildings were built around the edge of this square and the well stood in the center bordered by cedar trees[1].

He died 11 August, 1859, see his obituary at Elias S Bishop Obituary, and he may be buried in a family cemetery near Hughes Springs. (Some say it is in the edge of Daingerfield). Mary Alise Richey Bishop died in 1881 and is believed to be buried in Lone Mountain Cemetery near Gilmer. Her grave is not marked and cannot be located. Family information is provided by Fran Pendleton(deceased in 1995), a descendant and cousin[3], and from a Bishop family Bible record in the possession of Janet Nicholls, a Bishop Descendant[7]. Her burial place was related to this author by Charley Weldon Richey (Dec'd 2013), a Richey cousin. Charley and I found and visited the cemetery together quite a few years ago (about 1986). It was in the winter and many leaves were covering the graves and the cemetery was overgrown in the older parts. Alas, we were unable to find her grave.
