Mary Palmer was baptised on 7th September 1834 at Glapthorn in Northamptonshire, daughter of Rainey Palmer, formerly Smith, and her husband Daniel Palmer, an agricultural labourer and sawyer. Mary’s mother had been brought up in a Gypsy family. The 1841 census finds Mary living with her parents and siblings in Glapthorn, with several of her mother’s relatives listed at the same house. In 1851 Mary and her parents and siblings were still living in Glapthorn, with their address given as “Washpit House”.

Mary and John
On 31st January 1853, aged 18, Mary married John Berridge, a carpenter, who was from the neighbouring parish of Benefield, which is where they married. Mary and John went on to have ten children at Benefield between 1854 and 1875, although two died young. The 1861 and 1871 censuses both find Mary, John and their children living in Benefield, with the 1871 census noting that they lived at Upper Benefield.

Back in Glapthorn, Mary’s mother died in 1860, and her father died in 1876.

Some time between 1875 and 1881 Mary and John moved from Benefield back to Glapthorn. The 1881 and 1891 censuses each find Mary and John living in Glapthorn with some of their children, and their grandson Albert (their daughter Ruth’s son) whom they raised.

Mary died on 7th August 1896, aged about 62 years old. John survived her by nearly seven years.

This baptism has been linked to the Mary Palmer who married John Berridge on the basis that their marriage certificate gives her father's name as Daniel Palmer, sawyer, and in the censuses after her marriage, Mary consistently claimed to have been born around 1834 in Glapthorn. Moreover, one of the witnesses to Mary and John's marriage was a Louisa Palmer, and the Mary baptised in 1834 had a sister called Louisa.
