Isabella Palmer was born in 1845 at Glapthorn in Northamptonshire, daughter of Rainey Palmer, formerly Smith, and her husband Daniel Palmer, a carpenter and agricultural labourer. Isabella was not baptised until she was about four years old. She appears in the 1851 census living with her parents and siblings at Washpit House in Glapthorn.

In 1860, when Isabella was about fifteen years old, her mother Rainey died. The following year's census finds Isabella living with her widowed father and some of her siblings at Upper Street in Glapthorn. By this time Isabella was working as an agricultural field girl. She has yet to be researched after 1861.
