Mary Freeburn was a descendent of Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus, mentioned in Scott's poem, "Marmion." Her parents first came to America in 1833, and settled in Philadelphia prior to moving to Preston County. (Morton).

Mary is listed as a widow in the 1880 US Census, living in Valley District, with son, William G., and daughter, Mattie. Their home was located in Valley District next door to the Asa D. Squires family.

Mary is buried in the Gordon Cemetery, near Gladesville, alongside her son, Edward Bunker Conley. Gravemarkers can be found. Her cause of death was listed as "Tumor in side."
