Mary Winifred Conklin was born on 20 January 1922 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. She grew up in Jerseyville in a home with her parents, younger sister, Marjorie and Grandmother Keller. She graduated form the College of St, Teresa in Winona, Minnesota and also received a Masters degree in history from the University of Iowa. Receiving a master’s degree was a very unusual accomplishment for a woman at that time. Before she married she taught at Julienne High School in Dayton Ohio and then later in Wilmette Illinois. She spent many years at home raising her four children and later returned to teaching where she taught both regular high school and adult high school. As a child she was called Mary Winifred but as an adult preferred to be called by her middle name. She died on 19 August 2000 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
