Facts and Events
Mary Ethel Braught parents were Samuel Irvin Alloway (Jr) and Elsie Jane Potter. She said that she lived in Guthrie County, IA 1902-1922, when she moved to Polk County, IA. Samuel Sr. had two wives who were sisters. In the 1990s I periodically got to Des Moines and usually managed to have a visit with aunt Mary (always in fine spirits, good mind, wonderful attitude, and stable health at age 100 in Ankeny, IA nursing home). 1925 Des Moines, IA Directory shows Mary E. Braught Mrs. Cashr Red Ball Sotres, Inc. living at 1522 Dean Av. (with husband Herschel). 2001 family celebration of her 100th birthday included many family (g.g.grandchildren, etc.). I was present and took some photos. See Ankeny (Iowa) Press Citizen newspaper photo and article, pg 1. Nov. 11-17, 2003, featuring three residents of Sunny View Care Center, all over age 100; including Mary Braught, age 102, a native of Shelby County and living most of her life in Des Moines. Note from g-grand daughter Christie, advised that at her birthday party with several family present, she was very alert and cheery (she was most always cheery throughout her life). The other two ladies were ages 105 (Manila Coppock of Ankeny )and 103 (Florence Burnham of the Adel, IA area). I had met each of these ladies at that residence the summer of 2003. From Des Moines Hamilton Funeral Home program (copy in my file of Herschel Braught) shows her photo (about age 100), William Todd officiating with interment at Glendale Cemetery (next to husband Herschel and near stone for Loran Robert Braught). Pall Bearers great grandsons (or great great grandsons and *husband of granddaughter Christie Olson Campbell) Steve Olson, Ryan Campbell, Randy Reese, Charles Campbell*, Ryan Smith, and Craig Reese. Honorary Pallbearers Dale Williams and Jim Williamson (husbands of great granddaughters). It mentioned that Mary was born November 22 1901 at Shelby County, Iowa and died June 28, 2005 at Ankeny, Iowa. The program information included the following, " Mary Braught, 103, a resident of Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday June 28, 2005. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saterday July 2 at Hamilton's Funeral Home on Lyon Stree with interment following at Glendale Cemetery. Mary graduated from Casey, Iowa High School and was a member of Union Park United Methodist Church. She enjoyed family gatherings and travel. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Olson of Des Moines, six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; and three great-great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Braught, her daughter, Carolyn White, parents, Samuel and Elsie Alloway, two sisters, Sadie Meredith and Lucille Philips, and granddaughter, Kimberly Williamson. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.Saturday prior to the service at eh funeral home. Memorials may be made to Union Park Methodist Hospital or Iowa Health Home Care Taylor House". I could not attend due to prior commitment, but sent flowers to the funeral home and then travelled to Des Moines the following week to take her daughter, Barbara, for a dinner and chat at her home. Barbara's daughter, Christie Campbell had hosted a reception after the funeral and left the following morning for a vacation in Hawaii. She mentioned that Mary's nephew, John Phillips, had attended the funeral. References
