Maria Moles was baptised on 14th December 1828 at Willian in Hertfordshire, daughter of a straw plaiter named Hannah Moles, formerly Pratt, and her husband William Moles, an agricultural labourer. Maria appears in the 1841 census living at Willian with her parents and siblings, and next door to her paternal grandparents.
Maria was married on 10th February 1850, aged 21, to an agricultural labourer named James Waldock. He was from Great Wymondley, the village immediately south of Willian. They married at Great Wymondley, but then moved one village further south again to Little Wymondley, where they appear in the 1851 census. They had a daughter, Eliza, baptised at Little Wymondley in 1851, but she died the following year. They then had another daughter Hannah, baptised at Little Wymondley in 1853. They had a son called George in 1855 who died as a baby.
Some time between 1853 and 1856 the family moved from Little Wymondley to Great Wymondley, where they had another six children baptised, although two of those died young. Back in Willian, Maria's mother died in 1857.
Each census from 1861 to 1901 finds the family living in Great Wymondley. Maria's daughter Hannah was married in 1872 and had a daughter in 1873, but then died in 1874. Maria and James subsequently brought up their motherless granddaughter.
Maria's father died at the workhouse in the nearby town of Hitchin in 1879.
The 1881 and 1891 censuses each find Maria and James living in Great Wymondley with some of their children and their granddaughter. The 1881 census also records that Maria worked as a straw plaiter. The 1891 census gives the family's address as 'Horn Beams'; Hornbeam Cottages is a row of small thatched cottages on the west side of Arch Road in the village, built in 1818.
Maria died in 1907, aged 78. James outlived her, but only just - his death was registered the quarter after Maria's.
