James Waldock was baptised on 7th April 1828 at Great Wymondley in Hertfordshire, son of Catherine Waldock, formerly Grey, and her husband Thomas Waldock, an agricultural labourer. James appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings in Great Wymondley. His married sister Catherine and her family were living in the same house, as was a nephew, Daniel Watson Waldock, (his sister Ann's son) who was only a year younger than James was.

James was married on 10th February 1850 to a Maria Moles, who was from the neighbouring village of Willian. They married at Great Wymondley, but then moved to another neighbouring village, Little Wymondley, where they appear in the 1851 census, when James was described as a farm labourer.

They had a daughter, Eliza, baptised at Little Wymondley in 1851, but she died the following year. They then had another daughter Hannah, baptised at Little Wymondley in 1853. In 1855 they had a son called George who also died young. Some time between 1853 and 1856 the family moved from Little Wymondley to Great Wymondley, where they had another six children baptised, although two of those died young. Therefore James and Maria had a total of nine children between 1851 and 1870, four of whom died as babies.

Each census from 1861 to 1901 finds the family living in Great Wymondley. James's daughter Hannah was married in 1872 and had a daughter in 1873, but then died in 1874. The 1881 and 1891 censuses find James and Maria bringing up their motherless granddaughter. The 1891 census specified that the family lived at 'Horn Beams'; Hornbeam Cottages is a row of small thatched cottages on the west side of Arch Road in the village, built in 1818.

Maria died in 1907, aged 78. James outlived her, but only just - his death was registered the quarter after Maria's. He was 79.
