Hannah Waldock was baptised on 20th March 1853 at Little Wymondley in Hertfordshire, daughter of a straw plaiter named Maria Waldock, formerly Moles, and her husband James Waldock, an agricultural labourer. The family moved to neighbouring Great Wymondley shortly after Hannah's birth, where she appears in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses living with her parents and siblings.
On 14th December 1872, aged 19, Hannah married man named John Andrew Croft. He was 23, but already a widower. They had one daughter, Maria, in 1873. The following year, Hannah died, aged just 21.
John went on to marry for a third time in 1876, whilst Maria was brought up by Hannah's parents.
