John Andrew Croft was baptised on 20th May 1849 at Great Wymondley in Hertfordshire, son of William and Mehetabel Croft. In 1872, aged 23, he married Hannah Waldock. That marriage records that he was already a widower, although no trace of his first wife or marriage has yet been found. John and Hannah had one daughter, Maria, in 1873. Hannah died the following year, aged 21, and Maria was subsequently brought up by Hannah's parents. John married again in 1876 to a Mary Ann Lake, and they had a number of children together.

John died in 1923, aged 73.
