Margaret was daughter of John Shaw (abt 1724-4dec1770 Riccarton) and Helen Sillar (abt 1729, Craigie, Ayrs.-14jun1796) (K. Sillars). Scottish archives have an inventory of Mrs. Margaret Shaw or Macfie, d. 2feb1843, relict of John Macfie, calico printer in Glasgow; the inventory was produced by John Smith, writer in Irvine, and signed by John Allan Rankin, banker in Irvine, husband of Mrs. Mary Anne Macfie or Rankin, dau, and Robert Rankin, esq., of Muirhouse, JP for Ayrshire, commissioner appointed by Ayrshire Commissariat (K. Sillars). In 1841 Margaret, presumably as a widow, lived at Rose Villa, Irvine, Ayrshire, with son Shaw, daughter Margaret (1794) and John Shaw (born about 1788) (census). They had following children mostly in Kilmarnock: F Helen Jane MACFIE (1784-1866) (muir book). Helen d. 1861 at Edinburgh (K. Sillars). Helen married William Muir, had a son Sir William Muir, KCSI, whose son wrote the Muir book. F Elizabeth MACFIE was b. 1785 (K. Sillars) or 1786 (muir book) and married Gilbert LANG, Glasgow merchant (muir book). M John MACFIE was b. abt 1787 and d. 1868. John inherited from his uncle Sir James Shaw and became Sir John Shaw and lived at Whitehall, London (K. Sillars). F Margaret MCFIE was born 22jul1789; a Margaret McFie, born about 1794, lived at Rose Villa, Irvine, in 1841 (census). M Shaw MCFIE was born 3may1791; Shaw, born about 1796, lived at Rose Villa, Irvine, in 1841 (census). M David MCFIE was born 14jul1793. M James MCFIE was born 1oct1796 F Jean MCFIE was born 15jan1801 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. F Mary Anne MACFIE was born 16sep1807 in Kilmarnock. Mary Anne married John Allan RANKIN (b. 24jul1803, Irvine). They are registered in the 1841 census.

Margaret was sister of Sir James Shaw (K. Sillars). Sir James Shaw, Bart (1764 Riccarton, Ayrs.-1843 London).1781: Joined his brother in the USA with a brother where he worked for George and Sam Douglas, a Commercial firm, and on return, joined the same Mercantile firm in London eventually becoming partner in 1787.1796: After the death of Robert Burns the poet he helped support his widow and also helped gain employment for his sons.1798: Elected by the inhabitants of Portsoken, to the position of Alderman.1803: He became Sheriff of London and Middlesex.1805: Elected Lord Mayor of London. In his capacity of Lord Mayor insisted and subsequently won the right to lead the funeral parade of Lord Nelson.1806/1818: Elected to a London seat in the General election and held his seat for three successive parliaments.1809: Created a Baronet.1813: Received a second patent with a remainder to his nephew John Shaw son of Margaret MacFie.
