John MACFIE was b. abt 1787 and d. 1868. John inherited from his uncle Sir James Shaw and became Sir John Shaw and lived at Whitehall, London (K. Sillars). After his death the baronetcy became extinct (web). Sir John Shaw d. 19nov1868, aged 81, at 17 Sussex Gdns, London (Pall Mall Gazette). In 1841 Margaret, presumably as a widow, lived at Rose Villa, Irvine, Ayrshire, with son Shaw, daughter Margaret (1794) and John Shaw (born about 1788) (census). Sir James Shaw Bart (1764 Riccarton, Ayrs.-1843 London).1781: Joined his brother in the USA with a brother where he worked for George and Sam Douglas, a Commercial firm, and on return, joined the same Mercantile firm in London eventually becoming partner in 1787.1796: After the death of Robert Burns the poet he helped support his widow and also helped gain employmet for his sons.1798: Elected by the inhabitants of Portsoken, to the position of Alderman.1803: He became Sheriff of London and Middlesex.1805: Elected Lord Mayor of London. In his capacity of Lord Mayor insisted and subsequently won the right to lead the funeral parade of Lord Nelson.1806/1818: Elected to a London seat in the General election and held his seat for three successive parliaments.1809: Created a Baronet.1813: Received a second patent with a remainder to his nephew John Shaw son of Margaret MacFie.
