Margaret was born in a tent in Kangaroo Flat, Victoria. She married Thomas (Charles Thomas) Haydon, a police sergeant, and they had seven children, three sons and four daughters. Their second son Eric died at the age of four. Their third son was also named Eric in his memory.

Thomas died in 1933, leaving Margaret a widow. Margaret died in 1955 and was buried in the Ferntree Gully cemetery alongside Thomas and their son Eric.
