Lucy Mountfield was baptised on 15th June 1806 at Birdham in Sussex, daughter of Stephen and Sarah Mountfield.

On 22nd June 1828, aged 22, she married an agricultural labourer named Henry Chaffer. They married at Sidlesham on the Sussex coast, which is where he was from. Between 1829 and 1838 they had five children baptised at Sidlesham. The 1841 census finds Henry and Lucy living at Sidlesham with all five of their children and with Henry's mother. The 1851 and 1861 censuses also find them at Sidlesham, with gradually fewer children each time, presumably as they grew up and left home.

In 1871, the census finds Henry at home in Sidlesham, but Lucy was clearly unwell at the time of the census; she appears in the infirmary in the nearby city of Chichester. No indication is given as to what sort of illness she had, nor can we be sure whether she was simply there for a night or two that happened to coincide with census night, or whether she was there for a much longer stay.

Lucy died in 1876, aged 70, and was buried at Sidlesham on 31st October 1876. Henry outlived her by twelve years.
