Henry Chaffer was baptised on 17th June 1804 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Frances Chaffer, formerly Roper, and her husband William Chaffer. William died in 1810, and the following year Frances married a John Apps, who thus became Henry's stepfather. John Apps died in 1820, so before Henry was sixteen he had lost both his father and a stepfather.
On 22nd June 1828, aged 24, Henry married a Lucy Mountfield. She was originally from Birdham, but by the time of their marriage she was living in Sidlesham, which is where they married and settled. Between 1829 and 1838 they had five children baptised at Sidlesham. The 1841 census finds Henry, Lucy, their five children and Henry's elderly mother all living together at Sidlesham. Henry was working as an agricultural labourer. Henry's mother Frances died in 1847.
The 1851 and 1861 censuses each find Henry and Lucy living in Sidlesham, with gradually fewer children as they presumably grew up and moved out. The 1861 census gives their address as Boxham Lane. In 1871, Henry was living with his son Charles as a house called "Chaffers Cottages", presumably named after them. However, Lucy was not at home that night. She was at the infirmary in the nearby city of Chichester. How long she was ill and with what is not specified.
Lucy died in 1876, aged 70. After her death Henry went to live with his son Henry, and the 1881 census finds them living at Boxham Lane - so possibly in the same house Henry had shared with Lucy twenty years earlier. Henry died in in 1888, aged 84. He was buried at Sidlesham, where he had lived his whole life, on 26th November 1888.
