Charles Chaffer was baptised on 14th April 1833 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Lucy Chaffer, formerly Mountfield, and her husband Henry Chaffer, an agricultural labourer. Charles appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings (and grandmother in 1841) at Sidlesham. He became an agricultural labourer like his father. Twenty years later he appears with his father in the 1871 census, whilst his mother was in hospital in the nearby city of Chichester. Charles has yet to be researched after 1871.
