Facts and Events
Per delayed birth certificate, Herb used the birth of Bernard Dewayne Cowan, Missouri State Board of Health # 14083 dated 1935, New York Life Insurance Policy #17-389-097 dated June 1939 and Affidavit by attending physician of his birth, E. S. Smith, M. D. dated March 1941 as verification for the delayed birth certificate. He was living at 940 Walnut Ave. in Bellflower, Ca, County of Los Angeles, at the time of the Certificate dated Jun 24, 1942. Rev. Charles Edwards was officiating at the services for Herbert Cowan. Ulmer Funeral Home in Carthage, Missouri held the services. In California, Lester Hebert worked in a Dairy. With him was his best friend Harold Lytle. This was in 1944 when Dewayne visited their home. (I think this is the Lytle that married a Cowan) Lester Herbert's family came back to Missouri from Ca when Dewayne was five year's old-1941 per Dewayne Cowan in 2006. In 1941 per Dewayne, Lemuel Lewis Cowan and Fannie Mae Abbott Cowan went to California. The Herbert Cowan family came back to Missouri in 1940 for the funeral of Sarah Esther Wood Ellis in Jasper County per pictures taken at the Clarence and Bertha Smith home on Baseline Road (State Road K in 1940 Census), Jasper County, Mo. Per Virginia, she thinks they returned to Missouri the final date of 1944. On July 28th 1941, a Warranty Deed was filed in Volume 459, page 572 (C11437) between Albert B. Corder and Stella A. Corder, husband and wife of Jasper County, Missouri and Herbert Cowan (no address listed). Description of the land is as follows: All of a tract described as follows: Beginning at the Northwest corner of the East Half of Lot Six of the Northwest Quarter of Section Six, hence south four hundrd twenty feet, thence east ninety-six rods and four feet, thence north four hundred twenty feet, thence west ninety-six rods and four feet to beginning, all in Township Twenty-Nine, of Range Twenty-Nine. On the same date above a Warranty Deed on page 571 from Albert B. Corder and Stella A. Corder to Herbert Cowan was filed with the following description: all of the East Half of Lot Seven of the Northwest Quarter of Section Six, Township Twenty-Nine, Range Twenty-Nine, containing forty acres more or less. Both deeds were filed on September 13, 1941. Per Abstract and Index of Deeds of Jasper County page 26, Frank and Norma Rae Cowan Grantors sold to Herbert and Naamah Cowan on August 15, 1949 a Warranty Deed. Per Missouri Warranty Deed dated 6th April 1949 Herbert and Naamah Cowan, husband and wife, sold to Howard W. Pyle and Leola Pyle, husband and wife, the following described land: All of the East Half of Lot Seven (7) of the Northwest Quarter (NW1/4) of Section Six (6); Also, a tract beginning at the Northwest corner of the East half of Lot Six (6) of the Northwest Quarter (NW 1/4) of Section Six (6); thence South 420 feet; thence East 96 rods four feet; thence North 420 fee; thence West 96 rods, four feet to beginning all in Township Twenty-nine (29) Range Twenty-Nine (29). for one dollar and other considerations. Land was located in Jasper County, Missouri. #16219 Herbert and Naamah were living in Brooks Park, Minn at time of death of Naamah's sister, Bertha Smith, in 1965. "Herb" was buried next to his infant grandson, Terry Wayne Edwards, in Fasken Cemetery, Jasper County, Missouri. He may have lived in a variety of places in California during the 1940s, e.g., McFarland, Bellflower, Bakersfield, Artesia?, perhaps Long Beach. References
