Baptized as Lorenz Gresser in Schneckenhausen, Rhineland-Palatinate Superintendent of Highways for the town of Newtown, Queens County; Borough President of Queens NY from April 1908 to September 1911 From Illustrated History of the Borough of Queens by Georg von Skal (Flushing, NY 1908), p. 121: "LAWRENCE GRESSER, commissioner of public works, was born in Bavaria [sic], Germany, January 1, 1851. He landed in New York City February 14, 1851. He attended the parochial school of the Church of the Most Hold Redeemer, on East Fourth Street, New York City, and graduated therefrom April 26, 1865. Since December 16, 1889, he has resided in Queens County. His political sympathies are with the Democratic party. From 1896-1898 he was clerk of the Board of Health; 1898-1900 inspector of the Bureau of Highways; from February 2 to September 17, 1900, deputy commissioner of the Water Supply of the Borough of Queens; 1902-04, Secretary to the commissioner of Public Works; 1904-1906, cashier in the Bureau of Highways; January 1, 1906, commissioner of Public Works, Borough of Queens, a position he now fills. He is also a member of the Second Ward Democratic Association; of the Order of Elks, No. 878; of the Marquette Council, Knights of Columbus. He married Miss Margaret Beck, June 21, 1879, and after her death, which occurred February 21, 1901, he married Miss Kate Beuchner, November 5, 1903. Six children were born, viz. : Rev. John S. Gresser, pastor of Hollis and Springfield, L.I., Lawrence T. Gresser, counselor at law; Thomas, Otto C., Mary and Charles, the latter four being deceased." References
