Johann Gresser and Philippina Bingert emigrated from Schneckenhausen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany - CFS 1997 conversation with great, grandson, Larry Gresser.

"May 1997 letter from MHR [Most Holy Redeemer (see Anna Gresser marriage certificate)] indicates that [Anna Gresser's] parents, Johann Gresser and Philippine Singer (sic), were from Schneckenhausen, Bavaria

"According to Germans to America, Vol 4, pg 274, the Gressers arrived in NY on Feb 3 1853 aboard the SS Zurich which had sailed from Havre; Johann was 31; Philippina was 23."

Became naturalized citizen on Oct 19, 1858.

1880 Census (ed 143, sh 38, li 49, film 1254873) - Philippina is a widow living at 63 Pitt Street, Manhattan. Six children are living with her (Elizabeth thru Frank). Philippina's parents were born in Bavaria; all six children were born in New York. Elizabeth is a finisher of vests: Charles (16) and George (14) are book binders.

Per her great, greatgrandson, Lawrence, Johann was a shoemaker in both Germany and America. In Germany, he travelled from town to town making shoes for customers. They emigrated from Schneckenhausen in the Rhineland-Palatinate. Schneckenhausen (Slug's home) is located just east of and across the Rhine from the town of Speyer. Hardheim is about 45 miles east-northeast. To this day, it has about a dozen or so homes where the animals have the ground floor and the families live above.

Interment listing from Calvary Cemetery indicates that John was interred in Sec 6, Range 4, Plot O, Grave 15 on May 4, 1882, and a footnote adds that he had been previously buried in a different section of the cemetery on Dec 14 1874 at age 53.
