Lancelot's origins are unknown, but he and his sons received grants of lands in Yorkshire, in the border area between East and North Ridings. Lancelot's first grant, from Queen Elizabeth I on 26 March 1561, included the manor of Skirpenbecke and the lordship of Sherifhutton. His lease was terminated sometime before August 1569, when the same lands were granted to Ralph Hope.
