He matriculated pensioner from St. John's College, Cambridge, at Michaelmas 1568, then Peterhouse in 1572. He received his B.A. in 1572-73, and was a scholar 1573-75. He entered the Inner Temple (one of the Inns of Court) by special permission 2 June 1583.

John appears to have had holdings at Hutton-on-Derwent, but lived most of the year in London. He was involved in the Queen's mining interests, and acted as her surveyor in Yorkshire. In 1593, he represented Beverley, Yorkshire, in Parliament.
