She is on the 1880 census, age 9, with her parents in Valley, Polk Co., Ia.(ED 172 , p 545, fam #214/219) It appears Kitty and Wiliam were married the same day and time as her brother George and Maggie Crispin. They two couples witnessed for each other. The 1900 census, Webster Polk Co., Ia., shows us William C. Garten, 35, farming in Webster, Polk Co., Ia. Wife Kittie K., age 28, declares they have been married 4 yrs and she has born 1 child, shown with them.(ED 112, p 8B, fam #160/167) They lived in Boone Co., Boone Co. Co., Ia., and later Woodward and Moulton, Ia. During WW I people had very little to with the family as Carl was from Germany and wore "the typical German mustache" we are told. In 1920, Boone Co., Boone Co. Co., Ia., William C., 55, continues to farm. Wife Kittie is 49. Both children still in home. (ED 24, p. 4A) Kittie died of a heart attack.
