Facts and Events
The first record found on Justus was his marriage to Christiana Meyer. It was performed Dec 28 1848 in Waterloo Co., Ontario, Canada. So Justus had arrived in North America by then. We have not been able to locate Justus in the 1851 Canadian Census. His father and brother William were located in Woolwich, Waterloo Co. Ontario. However, we did locate an Assessment & Collectors Rolls for 1851 Woolwich Twp. Waterloo Co. Ontario and found a Ustus Mier on Con 6, Lot 13. Also, on 28 Oct 1849 John Mier, the son of Justus and Christina was baptized by the Rev. Binderman the Lutheran Minister that married Justus in Waterloo Co., Ontario. Justus purchased land in Hay Twp, Huron Co. Ontario, Canada sometime before 1854 because we found the baptismal record of his daughter Catherine Regina on 11 Feb 1854 and he is in the 1861 census in Hay Twp. Huron Co.. He must of moved shortly after that to Bruce Co., Ontario as his daughter Louisa's obituary said she was born Feb of 1861 in Formosa, Bruce Co. and church records show that his son Michael was baptized in Formosa, Bruce Co. in 1865. Justus Mier is listed in the 1867 County of Bruce directory. We found him listed in the 1871 Census of Bruce Co Ontario Canada. Justus is listed in the 1876 County of Bruce Directory . According to census records and obituary's the family came to Michigan in March of 1877. We found land transaction in Ogemaw Co., in 1878. Then we found the family listed in the 1880 census in Klacking Twp., Ogemaw Co., MI. In the1900 census Christina is living with her son Mike and his family. We found Justus and Christina's death record in the Ogemaw Co., records and their graves at the Holy Family Cemetery (formerly called St. Joseph's or Klacking Creek Cemetery) on Campbell Rd. Klacking Twp., Ogemaw Co., MI. On the tombstone the last name is spelled Mears. The will of Justus was found in the land records in Ogemaw Co., MI His legal heirs were listed. "John Mier, Rose City, MI, son; Ignatius Mier, Campbell Corners, MI, son; Catherine Rabb, Port Arthur, Ontario, daughter; Victoria Priester, Rainy River, Ontario (Algoma District), daughter; Louisa Prevost, West Branch, MI, daughter; Mary Ward, Quanecassee, MI, daughter; Therisea McPhail, Quanecassee, daughter (this is really his granddaughter); Michael Mier, West Branch, MI, son; and children and heirs of Jacob Mier, deceassed. Which children are minors residing with their mother Mrs. William Wilson at Campbell Corners, MI, which children are ______ as followes, Arthur, Lawerence, Adeline, Edward and Veronica." (Margaret is not listed) This piece appeared in the Ogemaw County Hearld in April of 1944 "EUSTUS MIER HAD EIGHT CHILDREN. His brother, William, had three, Gus, Henry and Conrad. Now, the generations of Eustus were this; John, who begat Katy, Eddie, Mike, Frank, Sadie, Mary and Adeline, is gathered to his fathers.
