STRONG -- Cliff's Market on Main Street closed its doors recently. For the past 21 years Clifford Durrell and his wife, June, have operated the grocery store which was noted for the excellence of Cliff's meat-cutting.
Durrell, a Strong native, went to work for the First National Company of Farmington in March 1946 after completing four years in the armed services. He returned to Strong as manager for the First National Store here in June and continued in that position until the store was closed in 1955, when he again returned to the Farmington store.
In June of 1955 he began working for the late Dana Peary, purchasing the grocery in June 1858 upon the retirement of Mr. and Mrs. Peary. Mrs. Durrell then began working in the store with her husband.
In the fire of Dec. 1969, when all the stores except one in the main part of Strong were destroyed, Cliff and June salvaged only the cash register. David and Gloria Lawry had the only store in that section of town left standing and on April 1, 1970, the Durrells purchased the Lawry store and opened the grocery store, now closed after 21 years.
The couple have held office in the town, the Strong United Methodis Church, the Davis Masonic Lodge and the Oppalunski Chapter, OES in spite of their bury schedule. They have retired to their School Street home where his aunt, Miss Anna Walker, makes her home with them.
