Her marriage to Federico Bernier was her second marriage. She was first married to Felipe, Federico's brother, who died. From her first marriage to Felipe, she had four children. Her step-son, Federico Bernier (Giraud), was born from Federico's first marriage to one of his cousins (a Giraud). Her son, Erasmo M. Bernier, states, in his autobiography, that she was hard of hearing.

She was buried in Coamo Municipal Cemetery. Her mother is shown to be Alejandra Colon in the record. Julia had 2 daughters named Julia and Mercedes and 2 sons named Agustin and Erasmo. She was a widow at the time of her death. The death was registered with Coamo civil authorities on 8 October, 1929, at 1:00 pm in the afternoon.

    This is the only reference to her mother's surname, Palau, that is known. Her age is shown to be 66 in 1920. She is living on Calle Del Mercado with her brother at the time of the census. The census indicates that neither she or her brother could read or write, and that their parents were both born in Puerto Rico.
