    JOSIAH GONGAWARE
    Josiah Gongaware, one of the pioneer residents of the vicinity of Irwin, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Filtz of Irwin RD 1 at 6 o'clock Sunday morning. His wife heard him struggling and turned on the light. He died a few minutes later. It is thought he suffered a stroke. In addition to his widow, Mrs. Abigail Long Gongaware, 10 children survive. They are: William Gongaware, of California; John, of Irwin; Lewis, of California; George, of Cereal; Mrs. Margaret Stewart, of Arona; Mrs. Anna R. Gongaware, of Irwin; Jacob C., of Irwin RD; Mrs. Hannah Filtz at whose home he died; Charles, of Cereal, and Raymond, of Irwin RD. He also is survived by 47 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Surviving sisters and one brother are: Mrs. Minnie Bohlre, Slippery Rock; Mrs. Frances Pratt, Jeannette; Mrs. Margaret Long, Harrison City and Thomas Anderson, Harrison City. Mr. Gongaware was 81 years seven months and 12 days old. He was a member of the Circle Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be held at his late home at 2 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon. Interment will be made in the Irwin Union cemetery.

    Josiah Gongaware, son of John and Rebecca Ann (Ridinger) Gongaware, was born June 27, 1854. at Harrison City, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. He received a common school education and farmed until the age of eighteen, when he entered the Public Works, a coal mine near Harrison City.

    Here he worked for twenty years, after which he purchased a place near Harrison City, which he operated for nine years as a truck farm, or market garden. Leaving this he went to Derry, Pennsylvania, farming there for Mr. C.W. Gaut, of Irwin, for three years. He then rented the George Painter farm, not far from Irwin, Pennsylvania, which he occupied for five years, when he removed to the John George place, above the Yough Shaft of the Penn Gas Coal Company, near Irwin, which he still occupies. Mr. Gongaware served as school director one term, is a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Methodist church. May 27, 1873, he married Abigail F. Long, daughter of John and Hannah (Mull) Long, of Penn township, issue: William Franklin, born, December 19, 1873, mentioned hereinafter. Emma Jennie, born July 8, 1875, married James Gress, issue: Elva Irene and Earl Edwin; Mrs. Gress died September, 1896, and her children have lived with their grandparents since that time. John Elmer, born March 27, 1878, married Mary Billingsley, issue: Anna Margaret; they reside at Rillton, Pennsylvania. Josiah Marion, born October 18, 1880, married Myrtle Billingsly; issue: Leonard Leroy; they reside at Rillton, Pennsylvania. Lewis Mitchell, born December 16, 1883. George Lemon, born January 27, 1885. Maggie Minnie, born January 29, 1887. Annie Rebecca, born November 25, 1888. Steele Silvis, died in infancy. James, died in infancy. Daniel, died in infancy.
