"Judgement - vs- Joseph Pumphrey, Insolvent in the Madison Circuit Court $106.26. Said administrator asks cr. for amounts paid out as per vouchers filed for total of $675.99. Said administrator shows to the court that the judgement of Joseph Pumphrey at this time is uncollectable, said Pumphrey not being the owner of any real estate except a small house & lot in Elwood, and a small amount of personal property.... That Joseph Pumphrey being a Judgement debtor in a sum much greater than his distribution share of said estate he ought not to share in said sum remaining...." (As this is an administrator, and not an executor, I assume that Jackson did not have a will. P. A. Hawkins 25 Oct 1997.) ....................... Obituary copied from a typed copy mailed with a letter to my parents, 19 July 1978. Phillip A. Hawkins, 3 Aug 2002. Joseph M. Pumphrey, Jr. son of Joseph M. Pumphrey, Sr. and Rebecca Pumphrey was born September 6, 1865 in Decatur County, Indiana and came to this County with his parents in childhood. He was united in marriage to Sarah M. Peters August 25, 1883. This happy union was blessed with four children all of who survive him, D. F. Pumphrey, O. P. Pumphrey, Lola M. Duckworth, and O. C. Pumphrey. He professed faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1883 and united with the Liberty Baptist Church living a consistent member until his death, which came February 4, 1921, age 55yr. 4mo. 29 days. He leaves to mourn his departure a companion, three sons, one daughter, ten grandchildren, one half brother George Pumphrey of Mo., two step brothers, Vincent Vanbriggle of Atlanta, Denton Vanbriggle of Arkansas, one step sister, Mattie Alyea of Nebraska and a host of friends. We loved him, yes we loved him But Angels loved him more, And they have gently called him To yonder happy shore. The Golden Gates swung open A loving voice said come And with farewells unspoken He calmly entered home. God in His wisdom has revealed To Him, his love has given, Although his body slumbers here His soul is safe in heaven. ....................... Per Lois (Pumphrey) Hawkins: Joseph Marion was raised in Nevada, Liberty Twp., Tipton County, IN. Joseph and Sarah Margaret lived with her aged grandparents, James B. & Eliza Shuck, farming their land, and taking care of them. Joseph owned a grocery store on the northwest corner of Groomsville center. Joseph Marion was called Joe. Joseph played the violin. He made one about 1918, taking a couple of blocks of Maple and scraped and shaped it. The bow was strung with hair from a white horse. "Tip" (O. C.) gave it to Lois who had taken lessons on it one summer when she was young. There is a rattle snake rattle in the violin.
