RAY-STOCKDALE-VANBRIGGLE DATA (From "Hawkins Family...., by Harold T. Hawkins, 1989, p. 198) Rebecca Ray (b. 22 July 1828 Franklin or Decatur Co., IN; d. 25 April 1907 Tipton Co.) was the wife of Joseph M. Pumphrey Sr. She was buried beside her 3rd husband at Liberty Cemetery (Prairie Twp., Tipton Co.). Her parents were Robert Ray and Hannah (Fordice/Fordyce)Ray. They were married 13 June 1820 in Franklin Co., IN. The 1850 Census of Decatur Co. IN, Jackson Twp. P.l32b, we found a Hannah Ray, aged 53 (ca.b.1797 New York), with daughters, Rebecca,22; Tarah J. (uncertain of name),age 16; Sarah A.,age 9; and a son, William,17. They are living with another son, John Ray, 27, and his wife, Sarah A.,21. Rebecca (Ray) Pumphrey did marry two times in Tipton Co., IN after Joseph Pumphrey died in 1866. Her second marriage was on 7 Feb 1867 to William Stockdale, a widower. He was b.ca.1814--no death date known. They are listed in the 1870 Census of Tipton Co., Liberty Twp., p,513 #92. Here our Joseph M. Pumphrey Jr. (1865-1921) is age 5 and his sister, Mary Pumphrey is 15. Rebecca has a son, Arthur Stockdale, age 2 months old. Since Arthur is not in the 1880 Census, we presume he died young. Rebecca's third marriage was on the 7 May 1874. She married Joseph D. VanBriggle, a widower. This Joseph VanBriggle had 3 children from a previous marriage listed in their 1880 household (Prairie Twp.,p 59 #226)--Mattie.16; Denton,14, and Vincent.12. Joseph & Rebecca had no known children. In the 1900 Census, Prairie Twp., p.223A #208, Rebecca reported she had had 4 children, but only one living in 1900 (our Joseph Pumphrey, b.1865). ................
