Joseph McKenzie was born in 1855 at St Pancras in Middlesex, a northern suburb of London. He was the son of Mary McKenzie, formerly Gobby, and her husband Alexander McKenzie, a Scottish tailor.

Joseph appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings at 12 Munster Square in St Pancras. He has yet to be traced after 1851.
