Alexander John McKenzie was born on 21st August 1836 at Marylebone in Middlesex, a north-western suburb of London. He was the son of Mary McKenzie, formerly Gobby, and her husband Alexander McKenzie, a Scottish tailor. He was baptised on 23rd October 1836 at All Souls' Church in Marylebone.

Alexander has yet to be traced after his baptism.
