link Family tradition is the Dr Joseph Jacobs is a grandson of Nicholas Jacob of Hingham the immigrant who died 1657 [As a descendant of Joseph / Josue Jacob(s) from a long line of genealogist we had no such tradition. The Cabot line in relation to the Balcomb and Jacob ancestry was well known]. The source says that Nicholas' grandsons Daniel, Nicholas and Nathaniel all came to Connecticut. However, the author presents no evidence that Dr. Joseph Jacobs was a relative. "Dr. Joseph Jacobs was the first physician of Mansfield, and resided in that part of the town called Pleasant Valley. He was a large land. owner. and had a botanical garden, from which he gathered healing herbs [Again no family tradition makes this claim - his son Joseph was an ethnobotanist and this is pure conflation of names]." The author goes on to state he married Sarah daughter of Samuel Storrs without evidence. Note the age at death given on Sarah's burial monument is is not consistent with this theory. It says she died January 8, 1734/5, at the age of 59 years and 10 months. If accurate (and it sounds pretty precise), that would put her birth in about March of 1674/5. But Sarah Storrs, as the Barnstable, Massachusetts records show, was born June 28, 1670. Charles Storrs used this date not only in his book, but on the granite monument he erected in Mansfield in 1879, to honor the original Storrs family, not fifty feet from Mrs. Sarah Jacobs’s grave. That date is literally carved in stone. Monument erected by Charles Storrs in 1879 to honor the family of Samuel Storrs, the immigrant, in Mansfield, Ct. It lists Samuel's daughter Sarah as born on June 28, 1670. Moreover no mention is made of Dr Jacobs in Samuel Storrs' detailed will. See instead TAG 56: 160-169; 230-236.@164 which shows he married Sarah Lindsey.

  9.   He married first Sarah Lindsey 18 Dec 1692 in Lynn. Sarah died in 1734 and Joseph Jacobs married second to Elizabeth (Case) Doughty relict of Benjamin Doughty by 25 Nov 1735. (It it said that he married Sarah Storrs by this simply is not the case). His grandson Benjamin Jacobs married his cousin Elizabeth Balcom daughter of Jean Balcom their cousin who also came from Jersey to Lynn. His daughter Sarah Jacobs was the wife of Jean Balcom. His son Samuel married his step-daughter Desire Doughty. He was involved in several law suits and assisted in probates. Josue / Joseph Jacob was granted granted guardianship of all four daughters of Elizabeth Case and Benjamin Doughty: Desire, Elizabeth, Margaret and Martha Doughty. His son Samuel married Desire Doughty. Two death dates for an Elizabeth Jacobs remain unclaimed in Mansfield excluding the wives of Joseph's children and grandchildren: 5/15/1769 and 11/5/1740. One of these is likely the death date of Elizabeth Case-Doughty-Jacobs.

No evidence exists that he was the "Dr." Joseph Jacobs who grew healing herbs. The first evidence of this description is with his son Joseph Jacobs. We know that Joseph / Josue Jacob(s) had a tanning license from court records.
