  According to "Sutter County Biographies" History of Sutter County, California - Thompson & West , 1879 -

Marcuse, J., Merchant in Yuba City; was bprm om Germany in 1832, emigrated to the United States, landing in Philadelphia in 1848; moved to Richmond, Virginia where he lived until 1869; in that year he came to California and settled in this county engaging in the mercantile business; he has also been engaged in farming in the county. Mr Marcuse has been one of the prime movers in reclaming land; he was elected County Treasurer in 1872, and held the office for two terms. He was married in 1863 to Mrs. Mitteldorfer, a native of Virginia, they have five children - four sons and one daughter.
