Source:History and genealogy of 'Elder' John Whipple of Ipswich, Massachusetts : his English ancestors and American descendants wonders why Felt in his Source:History of Ipswich, Essex and Hamilton, p. 159, says John had a wife Sarah who d. 14 Jun 1658. This is presumably why. The obvious suggestion is that he had three wives: Sarah until 1658, Susannah until at least 1661, and then Jennet. However, since John's oldest daughter was named Susannah, this suggests Susannah was his first wife, leaving no room for Sarah. But then how to explain this death record? Was she a first wife of the John that m. Elizabeth Woodman on 5 May 1659? That John Whipple was the nephew of this one, known as Lt. John Whipple, and son of this John's brother Matthew Whipple, who m. (1) Sarah Kent, (2) Elizabeth Woodman.

- ↑ There are two John Whipples in Mass in the 1630s. This John Whipple was a son of Matthew Whipple of Bocking, England, came over with his brother Matthew, and lived in Ipswich. He is distinct from John Whipple of Dorchester and Providence, who came over about the same time as a servant to Israel Stoughton. They lived in the same area in England, but no relation has been proven.
