Born in New York in 1795, John Watts appears to have been named for John Burgoyne (1722-1792), a General in the English army during the American Revolution suggesting that John Watts' father was a Tory (an English sympathizer). With his third trip to America in 1777 Burgoyne received command of a large army in Canada and led an invasion of New York designed to isolate New England from the rest of the colonies. The campaign ended with Burgoyne's defeat at Saratoga [New York State, Sept. and Oct. 1777]. Returning to England while his army marched into captivity, he met with considerable criticism and retired from active service. http://www.masshist.org/bh/burgoynebio.html A well known American quilt pattern carries the name of Burgoyne Surrounded; the design with this name was first published in an American farm paper during the late 1880s.

John Watts d. Jan. 2, 1847, age 51y 6m 26d; buried Rob Roy Cemetery, Fountain Co., IN. --Gary Purviance, e-mail attachment, Jan. 3, 2005; Gary copied this inscription in the 1950s and the stone was still there the last time he checked in the mid-1990s; this cemetery is small and not well kept; the gravestones for three of John's children -- Sidney, Mary, and an unnamed child -- disappeared between the 1950s and mid-1970s. Although Rob Roy cemetery was transcribed by the DAR around 1932, the names after "Tumlin" are not included in their typed transcription.
