John Timothy was born on 1st August 1809 at Whitechapel in Middlesex, in the inner eastern suburbs of London, and baptised three weeks later at the Borough Welsh Congregational Chapel in Southwark. He was the son of Mary Timothy, formerly Davis, and her husband William Timothy, who worked variously as a labourer in the East India Company's warehouse, victualler and milkman.

Although John was born in the London area, the family appear to have been Welsh - as well as using the Welsh-language chapel in Southwark, his mother later gave her place of birth as Wales.

The family's financial standing was sometimes precarious; John's father spent some time in a debtor's jail around 1812.

On 29th October 1837, John married Mary Ann Cassanet at St Mark's, Kennington, in Lambeth.

John's father died in 1838.

John and Mary had four children together between 1841 and 1855. The 1841 census finds John and Mary living with John's mother and sister at Goldsmiths Place in Shoreditch. John was working as an upholsterer.

By 1851 John and Mary had moved to Bermondsey, living at 4 Aldred Street with their children. Both John and Mary were working as mattress makers.

John's mother died in 1860.

The 1861 census finds Mary and the children living at 38 Barbican in the City of London, with Mary working as an upholstress. John was living alone on census night at 4 Short Street in Newington, describing himself as a dealer in feathers.

John died in 1863, aged 54. Mary survived him by 25 years.
