Overview

John Sifers is believed to be the immigrant ancestor of the Sifers family southwest Virginia. He is thought to have married in Germany, where most of his children were probably born. It seems likely that he came to America during the Revolution, perhaps entering the country through Philadelphia. The first records we have for him show that he settled first in Wythe Co, probably near Wytheville by 1780.[1] He may have attended Rev. Stanger's Lutheran Church outside of Wytheville, as Rev. Stanger officiated at the marriage of at least one of his children (Eve, married Abner Willis in 1804). Sometime before 1800 he moved south into Washington County, settling near Saltville---perhaps first on Turkey Creek, and later moving to Locust Cove Creek area, where (at least in later years), he seemed to have raised his family. Certainly his known children (John II, Andrew, and Eve) lived in this area.

Notes

John Sifers wife is sometimes identified as Nancy Rigle. This appears to be based on a marriage record between a John Sivers and Nancy Rigle in Wythe County in 1819. WHile this John Sivers is most likely a kinsman of John SIfers (1), the DOM seems too late to be for the later.

Marriage Record
