  15. real estate value is $1000 and personal property is $220. They have sixchildren at home, Rufus, Ida, Wm, Margaret, John and Emma. On one sidelives Sophie and her first husband, Emanuel Gilbert. On the other sideof them lives Daniel Harshman. Shuff descendants marry into both ofthese families
  16. In later years they moved to just across the creek from the home of theirdaughter Ida and "Roop" Blickenstaff. Faris and Stella (Leatherman)Smith who were married in 1903, bought the farm on Meeting House Road.They tore down the old Shuff house and built a new one on the same sitefor their growing family.
  17. five children at this time: Virginia, John, Emma, Sallie and Elizabeth.They went to housekeeping on their farm along Meeting House Road, abouttwo miles west of John's parents on Gravel Hill. The road got its namefrom the Grossnickles Meeting house, the Dunkard church, about midwaybetween Johns home at "Schnitztown" and his parents on Gravel Hill.Schnitztown this tiny community along Meeting House Road, got its namefrom the "schnitz", slices of apples or peaches that the good Germanhousewives dried on the low shingle roofs of their farm buildings. Itwas the job of the children to shoo away hungry birds and chickens.Sally Shuff's sister, Jane (McGruder) Warrenfeltz lived further up alongMeeting House Road, so the two families were close neighbours
