Unable to find a death record for John in either Bay or Saginaw co, or at state level (Lansing). He was killed at railroad station in city of Saginaw when he missed his footing while assisting his mother-in-law aboard. See newspaper clipping.

Unable to find any further info but came across something that indicated John was briefly married to a woman named Catherine before marrying Julia.

Corey Janene MARENTETTE was given a large facial portrait of John. It was in a plain dark wood oval frame with convex glass. She understood that this was the only copy of the only photo ever taken of him. This much cherished likeness was one of the many possessions her abusive 2nd husband, Donny Joe WURM stole from her. He & his parents, Ambrose WURM & Emma SEEGMILLER, of Kingsley, Paradise twp, MI removed the portrait and destroyed it & used the frame & glass to replace broken ones on a family photo of their own. They did likewise with her similar picture of John's daughters, Olive Rose & Pearl Janet NIVEN as toddlers.

George Albert PORTER's notes mentioned John running a grocery store in Scotland or Lanark. It may have been possible in Lanark, Ontario...but not in Scotland...as John was born in Canada...and as far as anyone knows...never went to Scotland.
