Facts and Events
The Niles, Bannings and Tiffanys settled on Block Island, a small island off the coast of Rhode Island, in the late 1600s. In 1692, Nathaniel Niles, son of John [Sr.], bought a thousand acre section of Lyme, CT and the families settled there on adjacent plots in subsequent years. Part of one third of the acreage went to Edward Mott, husband of Penelope Niles and one third to Consider Tiffany, husband of Abigail Niles. His death is often given as 7 Sep 1683, but a court action was brought against him on 7 Nov 1685 by John Mott and his name appears on the minutes of a town meeting in April 1686. The death record of New Shoreham says "John, of John," and John's son John (b. 1680) grew up and married, so perhaps there is an error in the year in that record. References
