Text: John Machurick, Sr. passed away at his farm home Thursday, July 23 at 3:00 PM. Death was due to complication of diseases. He had been ill four months. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at St. Louis' Catliolic church at Abrams, the Rev. M. J. Fetko off iciating. Burial was in the Sobieski cemetery Pallbearers were Stanley Sutrick, F. Pyrdonia, John Brincka, Joseph Jendryck and Joseph Seyliss. John Machurick was born May 20, 1872 in Austria. He came to America and located in Abrams in July, 1903. Survivors are his wife, Mary; five sons, Steve of Sampson, John, of Cream City, Andy and Joseph of Chicago and Andrew of Abrams; two brothers, two sisters, and nineteen grandchildren A brother, Bert Machurick, of Pittsburgh Pa., attended the funeral.
Destination noted on ship manifest is Everson PA., which is just southeast of Pittsburg.
Marriage date determined by searching for Oconto Co. marriages in 1905, and found that Sept 19 was a marriage between John Macsurak and Agnes Katakay
Interesting website: http://www.kurucz.ca/history.htm
The current name of John's birthplace is Spisska Stara Ves, Slovakia.
Using the dates and ship name given on his PoN, I searched Ellis Island and found the following: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passRecord.asp?MID=16898570440161786976&LNM=MAC&PLNM=MAC&CGD=M&SYR=1901&EYR=1901&bSYR=1863&bEYR=1873&last_kind=1&town_kind=0&ship_kind=1&TOWN=null&SHIP=BARBAR&RF=10&SHP=BARBAR&pID=604838070069
This indicates that John was AKA Jakab could this be the Jacub traveling with Agnes?
I did an Ellis Island search and found an Aug 24th - Sept 4th 1901 passage of the Barbarossa. This sort of matches John Macsurak’s Petition of Naturalization, which states Aug 13th - Aug 24th. I went through all 100+ pages of the manifest and found no John Macsurak. What I found was:
First Name: Jakab
Last Name: Macsurak
Ethnicity: Hungary Last Place of Residence: Kesmark Date of Arrival: Sep 04, 1901
Age at Arrival: 33y Gender: M Marital Status: M Ship of Travel: Barbarossa
Port of Departure: Bremen Manifest Line Number: 0009
