Facts and Events
John Lies' origins are unknown. The age given when he died implies that he was born around 1776. His first confirmed sighting is in 1818, when he was married at Cropthorne in Worcestershire to Anna Maria Dingley. After their marriage, they settled in the nearby town of Evesham, where they had seven children baptised between 1819 and 1832. John worked as a shoemaker, and appears in a local trade directory of 1820 as having his business on Bridge Street in Evesham. In 1826 John's house was robbed by a Ralph Stockford, who was sent to Evesham jail. Stockford escaped a few months later, and promptly returned to John's house and robbed it again, before fleeing to Leicestershire, where he was captured. John died on 2nd July 1839 in Evesham. He was said to be 63 years old, and his children were aged between seven and twenty. Ann outlived him by about nine years, and appears in the 1841 census working as a shopkeeper on Bridge Street in Evesham, along with most of the children. References
