  13. "John Zettler Krumm, engaged in conducting a successful brokeragebusiness in Columbus, his native city, started upon life's journey uponthe 26th of August, 1870. His father, Frederick Krumm, was also a nativeof Columbus, born August 13, 1840, ad in the graded and high schools ofthe city acquired his education, beginning his business career as adry-goods merchant. He continued in that line of commercial activity formany years, after which he established a general mercantile store atShawnee. Oio. After a brief period had elapsed, however, he sufferedheavily from a disastrous fire and returned to Columbus. Here he wasappointed assistant postmaster under De-Witt C. Jones and thus servedfrom 1884 until 1888. In the latter year he established a queenswarestore and conducted the enterprise until his death in 1900. He made acreditable record as a soldier of the Civil war, enlisting as a privatein 181 and winning promotion to the rank of lieutenant and of captain. He was obliged to resign, however, in 1863 on account of woundssustained in battle. He served as a member of the board of education, was also superintendent of the construction of public scools and inevery possible way he sought to advance the interests of publiceducation. His knowledge gained as construction superintendent of thepublic schools fitted him for work in architectural lines and he becamea member of the firm of Dauben, Krumm & Riebel, being thus connecteduntil he engaged in the queensware business. He was a very close studentof political economy and was said to be one of the best posted men onfinance and political questions in Ohio. He was a great admirer ofWilliam J. Brya and the causes which he championed, and while the honorsand the emoluments of office had little attraction for him, henevertheless was a stalwart supporter of the principles in which hebelieved. Citizenship was to him no mere idle word but meant the supportof all that he believed would contribute to the best interest of hishome locality and the country at large. His wife, Mrs. Cornelia(Zettler) Krumm, a native of Columbus, is still living.
John Zettler Krumm is indebted to the public-school system of this cityfor his educational privileges. He was graduated from the high school inthe class of 1889 and took up the task of providing for his own support.Prior to this time he had sod and carried papers while attending school, carrying a Sunday paPer and also selling to the transient trade. Whileyet in school he purchased three routes for the Columbus Press, hiredboys to carry the papers and collected his money Saturdays. Realizing hevalue of an education he embraced his opportunity to continue hisstudies until he was graduated from high school and the same yearentered business life as a messenger in the National Exchange Bank, where he remained until 1891, when he resigned to accept a position ofbookkeeper in the Hayden Bank. Faithful-hess and capability are theonly qualities which win promotion in such an institution and that Mr.Krumm possessed these is indicated by the fact that he was advanced fromone position to another unil he became teller in 1898. His bankexperience was an excellent training school for the business in Which heis now engaged. In 1899 he resigned his position in the bank to enterthe services of an insurance company under promising conditions, butreceived a more favorable proposition from Rogers & Rutherford, aprominent and well established brokerage firm, to engage with them inthe brokerage business. He accepted and was placed in charge of thelocal security department, where he remained in faithful and efficientperformance of responsible duties until 1906. He then withdrew from thatconnection to engage in the brokerage business on his own account, buying and selling local stock and bond securities. Few if any arebetter informed concerning the financial market and he has also beenaccorded a liberal clientage, enjoying at all times the confidence andrespect of his friends and patrons. His business career has been markedby growing success and aside from his brokerage business he is adirector of the Columbus Stock Exchange and of the Capitol LocknutWasher Company.
On the 12th of December, 1906, Mr. Krumm was married to Miss AnneRegina Foley, of Columbus, and they have one daughter, Phyllis Anne, born February 14, 1908. Formerly Mr. Krumm was a member of the ColumbusPugh Videtts, which later became the Coumbus Rifles. His connectiontherewith was retained until business demanded his retirement. Inpolitics he is independent, governed entirely by conditions and thecapability of the candidate. In matters of citizenship he is progressiveand supports many mesures that are factors in the welfare and upbuildingof Columbus. He has membership in the Board of Trade and socially isconnected with the Ohio Club. Prominent in musical circles, he isserving as a member of the Congregational choir. He inherited musicaltaste from his father, cultivated his voice for many years, and hasalways been a close student of music not for any professional reason butbecause of his love for the art. In his boyhood days he was for a longperiod a member of the Trinity choir and hs always been regarded as avalued addition to musical circles and has been most generous in his useof this gift where he believed that he would bestow pleasure or aid inthe promotion of some good cause. Pleasure, progress, businessenterprise and interest in municipal affairs constitute well balancedforces in his life."
