Facts and Events
In his will, dated 22 May 1657 and proved 30 July 1657, "John Gore of Roxbury" ordered that "all the remainder of my estate [after the settlement of debts] should be improved together until my son Samuell be of the age of twenty-three years except my son should before this age change his estate or my wife hers, I say which of this time comes first that then my will is that the whole remainder of my estate should be equally prized and my son Samuell to receive and enjoy one-fourth part of my whole estate then remaining ... and my two daughters Abigall and Hannah to receive equally one-fourth part more at the age of twenty & one years, or the day of marriage ... and the other half of my estate I give unto my loving wife during the time of her natural life, whom I do make sole executrix"; "thirdly my will is that after the death of my loving wife, that all that estate which she did enjoy the time of her life shall be equally divided between my five children, that is to say John Gore, Mary Mylame, Samuell Gore, Abigall Gore and Hannah Gore ... the reason why I did not give my eldest son John Gore and my daughter Mary no more is because that they have received their full proportion before"; "fourthly my will is that if my loving wife should live widow long, and by reason of any hand of God as sickness or the like should be in any want, I do give her full power with the consent of my overseers to sell some land and spend the same for her comfort"; "fifthly I do desire my three beloved brethren Phillip Elliott, John Pierpoint [and] Amos Richeson to be the overseers" [SPR 1:300-1].
