John Giddens was born in North Carolina, according to the 1850 and 1860 Census records. He is found in the 1850 Randolph County, Ga census record, along with his family. He is then found in the 1860 Berrien County census again with his wife Nancy and children. John was in the 1836 Indian War, and applied for bounty land grants, which reveals much previously unknown information about him. It revealed his age at the time, his signature, which he signed as John Gideon as well as other important information. His widow again applied for benefits in 1900, and this application also revealed his death date.

In an 1838 Indian War Bounty land application for Thomas Giddens (1789-1851) John stated that Thomas Giddens was his father and Mary Giddens was his stepmother.
