For many years, little could be found connecting Silas to his father John. However, following a lead, the 1850 Randolph County,Ga census showed Silas as a child living in the household of John Giddens (spelled Gideon in the census record). Additionally, another descendent of John Giddens from his daughter Nancy, had an old family record listing some of the children of John Giddens, and Silas was one of them, his birthdate giving positive proof.

Silas was a soldier in the Confederate States Army, an was captured at the Battle Of Gettysburg. He did not live to be very old, but was the father of seven known children by two different women, one of which was his aunt, Sabra Ann Giddens, and the other his wife, Mary Ann Taylor. The first child of Silas and Mary Ann died as an infant and was not named. Silas was involved in an altercation with Benjamin Wooding in 1867, and the old court case is to be found in the Berrien Co., Ga. courthouse.
