As a child John had to have one of the small bones in his left arm removed. The doctor wanted to just take the whole arm, but John's mother would not allow it. John was so grateful all his life for his mother's actions. He was known for repeating whenever he had the chance, even in his elder years, how happy he was that his mother did not let them take his whole arm off.
