According to an IGI record of his marriage, his parents were listed as Jacob Fitting and Catherine Fesler.

 According to a descendant of John Fitting, he married Marie Petsch.  According to 'Notes on Fitting Genealogy' he married Mary Pettinger. It is possible that he had more than one wife.
 In the 1880 census, he may be the John Fitting, single, age 23, who works in a brewery and lives in the household of Godfred Meltzer in Brooklyn. {Brooklyn, Kings co, New York City, p. 202a}
 In the 1900 census, for Manhattan, ward 12, New York Co., New York, John Fitting [also indexed as 'Fetting'] is 38 born March 1862 in New York (parents Germany), carpenter, married 12 years; with wife Mary born Feb 1864 in New York (parents Germany) age 36, with 3 of 3 children living; children are George, born Nov 1882, 'apprentice architect';  Matthew, born Mar 1888, 'bookkeeper apprentice'; and John 10, born June 1889. {Columbus Ave., ed 540, sh 23a, p.230, roll 1135 HeritageQuest}
 In the 1910 census for Nutley, ward 2,  Essex Co., New Jersey, John Fitting is 48, born New York (parents New York), working as a carpenter, married once for 28 years.  His wife Mary is 46, born New York (parents New York), married once, with 3 of 3 children living.  Their son John is single, age 20, born New York, working as bookkeeper. {166 Kingsland Ave., ed 202, sh 6b, dwelling 125, family 142}
 NOTE: I have not been able to locate him in the 1920 census. There is a different family living at his address at 166 Kingsland.
  In the 1930 census in Nutley, Essex Co., New Jersey, there is a John Fitting, 68, from NY (fa NY, mo Germany) in Nutley, Essex Co., New Jersey. He owns his own home on Kingsland, and works as a general carpenter. He is living with wife Georgianna, age 67, who is probably not his first wife, as she married first at 20 [47 years ago] and he married first at 23 [45 years ago].  She was born in New Jersey. {ED 7-558, sh. 11B}
